What You Need To Know
Here’s what happened around the city for the week of May 23, 2022:
- Voter turnout is super low
- UCSF’s new hospital is approved
- San Francisco is the most childless major city in the US
- A Place for All advances to the full Board of Supervisors
Voter turnout is super low
As of Thursday, May 26, voter turnout was a shockingly low 11%. This is abnormally low for a June election, and half what it was in the February school board recall election.
There’s still time to vote! Make sure you mail or drop off your ballot by June 7. And follow the GrowSF voter guide to make it as easy as possible so you can get back to enjoying San Francisco.
UCSF’s new hospital is approved
As reported by the SF Chronicle, the University of California regents have approved UCSF’s plan to build a $4.3 billion hospital at Parnassus Heights, a huge step in its plan to transform the Parnassus Heights campus.
UCSF officials estimate that construction of the hospital will create 1,050 to 1,200 jobs over its course, and that the new hospital will create around 1,400 new jobs for staff and physicians upon its completion. Construction will begin in 2023, and the hospital will open in 2030
San Francisco is the most childless major city in the US
An analysis by the SF Chronicle using the latest US census data shows which neighborhoods have a large proportion of kids, and reveals that we have the smallest proportion of kids of any major city in the US.
By share of neighborhood population, Seacliff and Bayview Hunters Point take the top spots with 21.2% and 21.1% respectively. By total number of children, however, Sunset/Parkside is on top with 11,404 followed by Bayview Hunters Point with 9,079.
A Place for All advances to the full Board of Supervisors
A Place for All, Supervisor Mandelman’s legislation to end street homelessness, took a big step toward passage on Thursday. Supervisors Melgar, Stefani, and Mar voted 3-0 to advance it out of committee with a positive recommendation!
Its next stop will be the full Board of Supervisors on June 7th and we need to make sure that it passes! Please use our tool to send your Supervisor a pre-filled email and urge them to support A Place for All. It's a small step that makes a big impact!

Celebrate San Francisco
There’s a lot to love about our city. Here’s what makes it great:
Walt Disney Museum’s free exhibit: The Art of Endangered Animals
Running through October 16 in the Lower Lobby and Theater Gallery, the Walt Disney Museum is running a free exhibit, part of its “Cause Awareness” program, titled “Creative Conservation: The Art of Endangered Animals”.
To produce this unique exhibition, The Walt Disney Family Museum partnered with five wildlife sanctuaries and conservation organizations located around the world—Animals Asia, FOUR PAWS International, Panthera Africa Big Cat Sanctuary, Wildlife ACT, and the Tchimpounga Chimpanzee Rehabilitation Center by the Jane Goodall Institute.
Circus Bella in the Bay Area
Circus Bella is running a free outdoor circus for kids and families from June 16th through July 17th. They will be performing around San Francisco and Oakland, so check out the website for the full schedule.
This year’s show is Flip * Flop * Fly, an exciting new series of pop-up performances for children due to happen at Bay Area parks. This one-ring outdoor show takes place from June 16 to July 17 and will feature jugglers, clowns, and more accompanied by live music.
Portola Music Festival, by the organizers of Coachella
A new electronic music festival is coming to town! It will feature artists Flume and Chemical Brothers, alongside acts like the East Bay’s own Toro y Moi as well as James Blake, Kaytranada, Jamie xx, Jungle, Charli XCX, Caroline Polachek, Caribou, Fatboy Slim and many others.

Enter BART’s short-story contest
BART is launching its first-ever short-story contest on June 1. If you’re a finalist, your story will be printed out for all to read on their BART journeys (plus you’ll get $200!).
In celebration of BART’s 50th anniversary this September, BART is proud to announce our first-ever short fiction contest: BART Lines.
With BART Lines, BART will shine a light on the literary voices that make the Bay Area unique, diverse, and creative. Our riders keep BART moving, and we want to highlight the best writing that the region has to offer and showcase it in our stations.
Starting June 1, we are seeking (very) short stories of 7,500 characters or less that revolve around the theme of “Motion.”
