Here’s what happened around the city for the week of August 1, 2022:

GrowSF endorses pro-growth Supervisors
We’re thrilled to announce our early endorsements for the November 8, 2022 Supervisor election! We’re supporting:
Catherine Stefani in District 2
Joel Engardio in District 4
Matt Dorsey in District 6
Rafael Mandelman in District 8

Catherine Stefani is a reliable ally to GrowSF on the Board of Supervisors and is running unopposed. We are happy to provide our continued support.
Joel Engardio is running against incumbent Gordon Mar, who is out of touch with his district. While District 4 voted around 80% in favor of the Board of Education recall, which GrowSF endorsed, Gordon Mar vocally opposed the recall and consistently sides with the farthest left radicals, who often oppose new housing and making it easier for small businesses to open and operate. Joel Engardio helped run the Board of Education recall and is a strong proponent of public safety, small businesses, personal property rights.
Matt Dorsey was appointed by Mayor Breed to fill in for Matt Haney, who won his race for the California State Assembly. He’s now running on a platform of safe and clean streets, creation of “Right to Recovery” zones for people to escape addiction, and supporting the creation of more housing and more businesses.
Rafael Mandelman has worked effectively with GrowSF on issues such as homeless shelters and conservatorship, though we do wish he were better on housing. If you’re a single-issue voter on housing, his opponent, Kate Stoia, has a better housing platform.
We are not endorsing either candidate in District 10 because the incumbent, Shamann Walton, holds terrible positions on the critical issues facing our city. Unfortunately Supervisor Walton’s challenger, Brian Sam Adam, doesn’t align on our housing policies. District 10 deserves better options than these.

Supervisor Walton insults and berates Sheriff’s cadet at City Hall
Supervisor Shamann Walton was caught on City Hall security cameras berating, insulting, and using a racial epithet against a Black man who is a Sheriff’s cadet. He was just trying to do his job and asked the Supervisor to remove his belt because it set off the metal detector.
Rather than acting like a reasonable person, Supervisor Walton instead launched into an invective against the cadet and asked “Do you know who I am?” But it didn’t stop there…
“President Walton became very angry with Cadet (name redacted), who is African American, and said, ‘it is N-words like you that looks like me that is always the problem’ referring to the security protocols as some ‘N-word shit’ several times as he yelled at Cadet (name redacted),”

Mayor Breed has demanded that Supervisor Walton apologize, which Walton rejected by threatening to sue the cadet. We think that Supervisor Walton should at least give a formal apology to the man he insulted.
District Attorney Jenkins pledges to prosecute fentanyl dealers
Newly appointed District Attorney Brooke Jenkins is officially breaking with Chesa Boudin’s lenient fentanyl dealing policies and is “pulling back 30 plea offers she deemed too lenient.”
“On my watch, the D.A.’s office is going to take these cases seriously,” Jenkins said in an interview. “We are dealing with a public health crisis with regards to fentanyl, and no longer are we going to be giving a free pass to people who sell (that) drug in San Francisco.”
Chesa Boudin is not running again this November
In a move that surprised some political insiders, disappointed political consultants looking for another payday, and gave relief to exhausted activists and campaign volunteers, Chesa Boudin announced that he will not be running for his old job this November.
Downtown office recovery slower than other cities, but hope remains
In a troubling sign, downtown SF has amongst the highest office vacancy rates in the US, as workers continue to work from home.
Kastle Systems, which monitors card key activity in office buildings, reported a 38.1% occupancy rate in San Francisco for the week of July 6 to July 13. Meanwhile, New York had 40.7% occupancy, Los Angeles 41.8%, and Austin had 58.1%.
Critical to bringing life back to the SF downtown core will be diversifying what the space is used for, or reimagining what can be done altogether. Whether that’s office-to-housing conversion, tax incentives for companies to go back, or some other creative reuse remains to be seen.

Alongside the United Democratic Club and ENDC, GrowSF is co-sponsoring a forum where voters can learn about the major upcoming ballot measures and hear from proponents and opponents to understand the issues from both sides. This will be a great way to get informed.

The San Francisco Eastern Neighborhoods Democratic Club and the Chinese American Democratic Club are hosting a debate between the candidates for District 6 Supervisor. Hear from our endorsed candidate, Matt Dorsey, as well as his competition, and make an informed decision. This is a must-attend event for District 6 residents!
