The GrowSF Report: All the good stuff, none of the bad

What You Need To Know

Here’s what happened around the city for the week of October 3, 2022:

- Affordable housing permits for Stanyan approved
- All Out SF launches a celebration of San Francisco
- Low cost solution to deterring sideshows installed
- Adorable pygmy hippo arrives at the San Francisco zoo
- Cable car operator lands role in Hallmark Christmas movie

Affordable Housing permits for Stanyan approved

A gritty, vacant lot in a prime location may finally see a brighter future: as the site for 160 affordable homes. Building permits were just approved for an eight-story housing development at 730 Stanyan St., at the end of Haight-Ashbury and across from Golden Gate Park. Construction could begin in 2024 and families could be moved in by 2026. (We wish that construction could start sooner, but we’re happy to see this moving forward)!

All Out SF launches a celebration of San Francisco

For all of it’s faults, San Francisco remains a city worthy of celebration! Enjoy the city, while learning how to make it better, by joining All Out San Francisco’s “7 Days of Celebration & Service”, from October 16th to 23rd. Each day of that week will be dedicated to a different aspect of life in SF, and will offer ways to enjoy the community and support it.

Low cost solution to deterring sideshows

Sideshows, also known as “street takeovers”, are a Bay Area tradition, having started in Oakland. Unfortunately, they are also very dangerous. Luckily, SFMTA has a low cost, effective solution: some unusual speed-bumps designed to deter sideshows. These have been installed in key locations in SF, and will be monitored for effectiveness. It’s probably better to leave the car tricks to the professionals anyway!

Adorable pygmy hippo arrives in SF

We are thrilled to announce the arrival of a male pygmy hippopotamus! At two years of age, he weighs “only” 364 pounds! Pygmy hippos are related to the larger, river hippopotamus but are rarely seen in the wild because of their secretive, nocturnal habits.

Pygmy hippos are listed as endangered. This little guy’s (364 pound!) arrival continues the San Francisco Zoo’s mission to care for and conserve endangered species.

Cable car operator lands a role in Hallmark Christmas movie.

Keep your eyes peeled this winter for local cable car operator Val Lupiz to a make an appearance in Hallmark’s “My Big Fat Family Christmas” movie set in San Francisco. SFGate reports the film crew shot scenes with a decked out holiday cable car last month, confusing San Franciscans trying to keep cool during the heat wave.

Celebrate San Francisco

There’s a lot to love about our city. Here’s what makes it great:

Fleet Week 2022 continues through Sunday!

The jets are already roaring over the city! Fleet Week began on Monday with free neighborhood concerts, free ship tours and will culminate this weekend with the spectacular air shows over the Golden Gate Bridge on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. San Francisco native Lt. Scott Goossens will take off in jet No. 3 with the Blue Angels!

SF Maker Market is this Saturday

Support local makers while exploring the seldom seen 2nd floor grand hall of the Ferry Building at the SF Maker Market this Saturday.

More FREE concerts in parks!

Yes, there is good stuff on Twitter. Here’s some of it:

Every year for Fleet Week, employees at Lucasfilm, creators of Star Wars, take a day to draw wonderful sidewalk chalk art outside their headquarters in the Presidio of San Francisco. Thought I'd share this year's pieces since there's a 10% chance of rain today. 🧵
