Making Sense of School Board Chaos: Latest Updates
HE’S BACK! Last month, Superintendent Vincent Matthews announced his early retirement to escape a toxic school board that has thwarted his ability to effectively run the school district. But this week, Matthews reversed his decision to leave and said he would stay one more year. The school district could use the stability, given the multiple lawsuits, recalls and parent protests aimed at the school board.
NO RENAMING FOR NOW. Only after intense public pressure, a lawsuit, and a ruling by a superior court judge did the school board move to rescind its vote to rename the schools. But the school board still refused to acknowledge the renaming process was flawed, saying it was “deeply grateful for the work of the [renaming] panel.”
A PLEDGE TO FULLY REOPEN ALL SCHOOLS IN FALL. The school board finally approved a resolution this week pledging to fully reopening all schools to in-person learning this fall.
Some good news from Muni
As more people continue to get vaccinated and offices begin to reopen, transit ridership is continuing to increase. SFMTA has used this down time to make upgrades, and Muni metro tunnels will have wifi when N and T service comes back in ~May.
Unfortunately, the K, L, and M lines which utilize the Twin Peaks Tunnel won't be brought back into service until early 2022, leaving business owners worried.
More slow streets
A new round of Slow Streets has been approved by SFMTA, giving people even more space in the city to safely walk, ride bikes, and play! Unfortunately, 4 other Slow Streets in our outer neighborhoods were delayed 4 weeks to make time for "further outreach".
Update: SF COVID-19 Vaccinations
San Francisco continues to quickly distribute the vaccine. Here’s the latest:
Vaccination Rate: 53% of SF residents over 16 have received at least 1 dose. 33% have been fully vaccinated.
Eligibility Currently all residents 50 and over, and also others with certain health conditions, disabilities, and those experiencing homelessness are eligible to be vaccinated. On April 15 everyone 16 and older can get a jab. See eligibility requirements.
Vaccine Sites: Find a vaccine site near you. Some allow drop-ins, while others are appointment only.
