GrowSF is proud to announce our first ballot measure: Affordable Homes Now
In partnership with Habitat for Humanity, Nor Cal Carpenters Union, Greenbelt Alliance, the Housing Action Coalition, SPUR, and YIMBY Action, GrowSF is thrilled to be running our very first ballot measure. The measure will speed up production of housing affordable to the middle class, teachers, and working families.
Join GrowSF and our partners for the Affordable Homes Now campaign kickoff this Saturday, April 9th at 10am. We will meet at 1377 Fell Street — across the street from the DMV at the statue of William McKinley, hear speeches from Senator Scott Wiener and Mayor London Breed, then head out to canvass for signatures.
What does it do?
The Affordable Homes Now measure will speed up the approval for multi-family buildings that contain homes affordable to the middle class, teachers, and working families.
Specifically, the three types of housing this measure will expedite are:
Working families: Multi-family housing where all of the homes are affordable for low-income families.
Middle class: Multi-family housing with 10 or more homes that provides at least 15% more on-site subsidized affordable homes than required by law. (Basically, apartment buildings with some extra subsidized affordable units.)
Teachers: Multi-family housing, or a building that includes housing and other commercial uses, where 100% of the homes are for households that include a San Francisco Unified School District or City College employee, and where at least 80% of the homes are subsidized affordable housing.
Why now?
San Francisco has a severe shortage of affordable housing, and that’s in large part because it takes too long for the City to approve construction of new homes. The average home takes between four and seven years to get approved! These delays drive up the cost of housing and SF becomes even more unaffordable.
Too many families are being pushed out of San Francisco because City Hall does not let people build homes. We can’t afford to wait for City Hall to act, we must act now.
What’s next?
We must collect 52,000 valid signatures to put this measure on the November, 2022 ballot. We need your help — sign up to help us collect signatures today!
