Election Special Bulletin: Voters Deliver a Message of Change
San Francisco Voters Deliver a Message of Change
As of 5 PM Pacific, March 6, 2024.
For the past few years, GrowSF has worked hard every day to bring positive change to our city and give voters the best information possible. Last night's Democratic primary results were a crucial step forward in our mission.
There are still at least 111,000 ballots left to count, or about 50% of all ballots cast, so we'll learn more over the next week. (Check SFelections.org for updates!), but we can confidently say the following:
The Democratic County Central Committee will likely be controlled by a pragmatic majority. As of the latest count, we have won 21 out of 24 seats! We don’t want to get ahead of ourselves with so many votes outstanding, but we’re well ahead of the 10 seats we needed to win. The candidates did incredible work, and we're so excited have civic-minded political leadership in place at the SF Democratic Party. The DCCC controls the SF Democratic Party's nominations for key city positions such as Mayor and the Board of Supervisors, so it means November is already looking good!
Voters supported ethics reforms, bringing algebra back to 8th grade, and accountable improvements to policing and drug treatment. All six GrowSF-supported city-wide initiatives are currently winning (and the one we recommended against, Prop B's Cop Tax, is currently losing). No matter the final outcome, the support for public safety measures and new housing is a sign that San Francisco voters want a government that does a good job delivering basic services.
What did GrowSF do for this primary election?
We focused on delivering high-quality information to voters about the issues that matter most to them. We sent our voter guide to 370,000 voters, in English and Chinese, and had over 90,000 visitors to our web voter guide in the last month (that's almost half of everyone who voted in this election!).
Our tiny team worked nights and weekends to make sure that our information was accurate and available to voters. We're so thankful for your help spreading the word, and especially for voting!
What is GrowSF doing next?
At this very moment? We're still analyzing and waiting for full results (and finally getting some sleep).
But our main focus is now on November. There are important local elections this fall, and we'll need your help clarifying the stakes, keeping everyone honest, and making sure that voters get the best possible information.
We're so excited to build on this progress!
